Head Coach Marty Johnson will have a younger team in 2010. The Irish come off a state championship in 2009 graduating many players and a lot of experience. But the younger Irish team has talent as proven with the JV record and varsity experience at running back and defense. Sheldon may use a more traditional drop back style this year or a keep it simple high percentage passing attack. Either way Coach Johnson will mold this group loaded with potential into a contender for the SW conference title once again.
Line Coach Les Phillipo expects to work with a young but talented group of incoming varsity players this year. Expect Strom, Nielson and Geiger to step in and fill the shoes of last years highly talented group as well as a strong JV class that is moving up. Coach Phillipo credits long term assistant Dave Lassen with helping him make this group of linemen one of the best in recent years.
Coach Lane Johnson takes a week to week approach to his defense. Each week Coach J's expectation is the Irish will be better and better. Look for a stout defensive line to prove tough on the run and experience with McCaskill and Brathoude returning to prove rewards. The linebacking group has good speed and the ability of players coming up should mean the Irish will have another solid year on defense.
Head Freshman Coach Hellwege is dedicated to improving the skills and teamwork of incoming freshmen. His experience the last
two years leading the team has resulted in an abundance of success. But Coach Hellwege's long term goal is providing a strong foundation for those entering into the program. His leadership and dedicated assistants Tyler Martell and Brandon Baker will continue to provide the JV and Varsity with talented athletes for the future success in the Sheldon Football program.
Coach Ludwig is considered a local icon when it comes to Sheldon Football. Since the 1970's Coach Lud has been pacing the sidelines both as the head JV coach and as a valuable down and distance assistant to Coach Johnson during the varsity games. Coach Lud's no nonsense approach has provided valuable JV playing experience and a nucleus of talent to draw on for the varsity. He has had tremendous success under the spread offense and tough defensive strategies over the years. Look for continued success for Coach Lud and his 2010 Fighting Irish JV team this year.
